Personal Data Protection

The Processing of Personal Data inside the European Union is governed by the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) (GDPR) which entered into force in 2016 and, following a two-year transition period, became directly applicable law in all Member States of the European Union on May 25, 2018, without requiring implementation by the EU Member States through national law.

In Ireland the GDPR regulations were introduced into new legislation known as the Data Protection Act 2018 which was signed into law on 24 May 2018.

In the United Kingdom the provisions of the GDPR were incorporated directly into UK law as the UK GDPR on 01 January 2021 and sits alongside the Data Protection Act 2018. Any reference to GDPR should be considered as reference to UK GDPR.

GDPR includes the key privacy principles along with individual rights and business’ obligations when processing personal data.
